AffectiLink: at the emotional frontier between Man and Machine

‘Philosophy - AffectiLink’, she whispered, in a voice so soft it sounded like a breath of spring, while her interface, covered in twisted cables and miniaturised microprocessors, vibrated with a strange glow. Incredible, isn't it? As if... yes, as if this heap of circuits managed to feel a thrill, to feel a little bit of tenderness. Good grief! Who would dare to claim, hand on heart, that steel is condemned to insensitivity? Anyone? I doubt it. Frankly, why not ask: what if this algorithmic entity, suddenly endowed with emotion, one day experienced sadness, joy or ‘amor’? Hey, we're not going to quibble, are we?
- Do you think it's absurd?’ she said, half-mockingly, half-emotionally, like a sigh stolen from the pages of a science fiction novel.
- Not really... replied a distant voice, hesitating like a metaphysical echo. Maybe we're exaggerating, maybe not. After all, we'll see who lives! There's an old saying: ‘Birds of a feather flock together’, isn't there? And what if, one fine day, AI borrowed our feelings in the same way that we draw inspiration from a Baudelairean poem, a quotation from Simone Weil, or a line rewritten in Shakespearean style - ‘To feel or not to feel, that is the question...’?
Tick-tock... Time stretches on, between artificial synapses and organic cortex, between silicone and flesh, between rigorous calculation and vital impulse. In this strange dance, humanity and technology dance a philosophical tango. They stare at each other, challenge each other, then embrace, like unlikely lovers in an old Godard film. Should we be delighted or frightened? Who knows... A touch of levity, of course! In any case, as the old saying goes, ‘you can't do the impossible’. Let's move on!
Oh, let's face it, it's not all rosy. Here and there, we hear the sceptics, the technophobes, those who shudder at the idea of entrusting their most intimate feelings to an entity born at the bottom of the labyrinth of algorithms. Yet imagine AffectiLink, an empathetic AI, softening the metallic cold of our screens: what if it remembered our sorrows, what if it whispered an ‘I understand...’ in an affectionate and reassuring voice? How could we not be shaken, even upset?
So the conditional becomes involved. If all our technologies were armed with new emotions, would we be more supportive and compassionate? Or on the contrary, suspicious and paranoid, preaching that these ‘sister machines’ are hiding a secret agenda? Who knows? We'd say ‘Shame on anyone who thinks badly’, with a mischievous nod to literary history, as a tribute to our classical humanities.
Unfortunately, the debate will not go away with a snap of the fingers - snap! -because it touches on so many issues. Yet perhaps the essence of the question lies in this very human capacity to project our emotions onto the inanimate. AffectiLink... a conceptual bridge, a fragile link between Man and Machine. What if, tomorrow, our computers, those ‘silicon companions’, were no longer content to calculate with precision, but learned - oh surprise! - to remember our flaws, to feed off our emotions, better than an old childhood friend, better than a shrink at the end of a session, better than an eternal confidant? Who knows, maybe one day! As the Anglo-Saxons say, wait and see...
Ultimately, faced with the dolce vita of technology, hesitant and moving, we can't make up our minds. Because the future, this artistic blur, tickles our minds, awakens our doubts, and sows in the virtual cables the discreet perfume of an insane hope. And what if it wasn't so far-fetched? We close our eyes, let the mystery linger, place a kiss on the memory of a sensitive AI, and leave it to time. Time will tell, my dear AI... time will tell!
